The Final Zone project

I dusted off submitted bugs for gdesklets. Boy, I feel lazy to check out most of them especially after the desktop computer went off and it took a month to get a new motherboard under warranty. After rereading bug #187516 , it turned out to be an upstream issue. Good thing workaround are already published and it is time to update that package including patch. Other bugs like #197122 and #197799 are pratically fixed as well. Unfortunately, this mail report managed to crash the fun so fixed packages will have to wait.

I almost complete the set of emotes and plan to work on weather icons. Making a cloud through application like Inkscape is challengin than expected. Some of them will be derived from Tango icons. Check out the new Echo emote artwork . The devil-grin emote is scarier than before. I am almost the artwork may not be ready for Fedora Core 6 Final Release as I expected but these new icons will certainly see the day on Fedora Core 7. There is an interesting topic on LWN related with Fedora Board to not bring X.org 7.1 to Fedora Core 5 yet. With the recent release of Nvidia driver , one of the problem is solved. I intend to upgrade from the current Fedora Core 5 to Fedora Core 6 Test 2. I consider triple booting the system but GRUB won't ajust to the current Fedora system forcing me to manually update it.

Finally the LinuxWorld in San Francisco is over. Pratically, all of Fedora Core 5 DVD were gone. As for Fedora among people in the show, Kasten summarized it . I also got the opportunity to try Test 2 of Fedora Core 6. Eclipse crashed during the boot up due to java error. Compared to last year, this exposition was not as exciting. However, it was nice to meet other Fedora contributor like Toshio. Now back to working on project for Fedora Core 6.

Met a lot of medias people, among them is the actual Linux Today editor Brain Profitt. The booth is very crowded as the DVD version of FC5, T-Shirts, hats go so fast. Nice to see Spot around and some of Red Hat staff like Anthony Green.

I met Jack (just come back from Japan) in Moscone Center, San Francisco, USA and set the equipments. While we were outside, the organizers moved the stuff in another booth due to their mistakes. We are ready for tomorrow exposition though.

I completed the set of emotes small and large following Nicu's suggestion about the outlines. I also found a trick to generate a simple shadow for the emotes. According to Diana Fong, "they are so expressive". Good to hear a good feedback after almost spending the night cleaning and rearranging these emotes. I spent most of times working on the emotes for Echo themes, the successor of Bluecurve icons. So far I completed the set of the small emotes using Inkscape through a TabletPC. The effort is displayed on Echo Development from the Fedora Project Wiki. As LinuxWorld San Francisco week is near, I hope to complete the larger version before.

I had a discussion with my teen sister about the operating system based on Linux. At first, it was about LinuxWorld. She assumed that this event would means that all people use only Linux. I added that some distros users also have a different operationg system like Windows for exemple so LinuxWorld also appeal for Windows/OSX companies interested to look at a Linux distribution. Second was about the industries. She said most studios use Mac only aside Windows. I pointed out that a Linux distros is also used as server/workstation. Recent case is Halo movie based on videogames. Third discussion was particulary intersesting. The use of MSN messenger. According to her, teens customized the message but it won't show on other applications like GAIM or AMSN. Another point has about a distros. Apparently, it seems that user like my mother is afraid of change. For example, the feel of OpenOffice is different from Office 2000 or Office 2003 mostly because of her environmental work. Just arrived in San Francisco. I am currently reside in a small city called Petaluma while waiting LinuxWorld. It looks like this thread reached one of mainstream . It makes me wonder if the debate simply avoids to assume the responsibilty for the system they use and blaming someone.

What is also interesting was the Xorg 7.1 breakage with current Nvidia drivers are done by a Nvidia developer. Complaining that a third party package won't work on a system like Fedora Core 5 because of Xorg 7.1 is not a good way to solve the problem. After, users relying on closed binary driver can choose to not update.

It has been almost two weeks without PC as the motherboard based on NForce3 broke. Even though it is under warranty, it will take times before getting a brand new one. As a consequence, I cannot work on packages like gdesklets. I will see how I will manage to translate some wikis though.

There is an extension from joga.com that provide more details about world cup football (soccer in North America) result. Unfortunately, it won't install on Fedora version of Firefox even though it is 1.5.x.y. It looks like a bug from joga,com. I submitted a bug report so hopefully joga.com will fix it. Following MrTom's (Thomas Canniot) suggestion, a poll is posted on fedoraforum.org about the new icon sets theme for Fedora Core. The feedback are worth a reading as it might provide some point to improve. Hopefully this kind of information will be useful for Diana Fong and Máirín Duffy.

Togo team played well despite the loss against Korea Republic 2-1 and less player. Let's hope they can do better. France and Switzerland made a scoreless tie. The former lack some finess while the latter made a excellent job on defense. Brazil won against Croatia 1-0. Although the former didn't play their full potential, the latter didn't give up and manage to cause trouble on Brazilian defense.

Thanks to Fedora XGL repository blog , my FC5 x86_64 is now running XGL. One notice change is the removal of window tab preference inside Desktop--> Preference --> Themes. The animation is quite impressive as it reminds the Luminocity experiment provided by Seth Nickell and company. As pointed out before, XGL requires hardware accelerator and extras dependancies such as xorg-x11-server-xgl. On a system running with a AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 1GB of RAM and a Nvidia Geforce 5600XT, the performance is good with very few ram consumption. I haven't a chance to test AIGLX as the open source version of Nvidia driver "nv" is not supported at the moment. It appears these technologies demonstrate how fast the open source projects evolve.

Being a great football (not soccer, I wonder who came with this word fan, I can't resist to watch one of match. Currently Germany leads 2-1 agaisnt Costa Rica. Étant un fanatique de football (soccer, connais pas), je ne peux resister à regarder l'une des match. Présentement, l'Allemagne mène 2-1 contre Costa Rica.

After a year of contribution to Fedora Project and also Fedora News, I decided to become Fedora Ambassador of Vancouver, Canada. One thing I will have to deal is some people are very afraid of change. The task might be challenging but a small action can make a big leap.

According to this Press Release via OS News , it appears Sun Microsystems allow the redistribution of their Java development for Linux distributions under a new license called Operation System Distributor's License for Java or in short "Distro License for Java". Currently, only binaries are licensed as the source code is not available for the public although SUN promise to open source Java . I wonder if that announcement will affect the whole GCJ on which Fedora Project is focusing. After reading this topic on Fedora Forum, I modified the fedora-core.repo and fedora-update.repo to enable i386 support on my Fedora Core 5 x86_64. Yumex method worked fine except during the update which caused conflict between two architectures because of the variable $basearch. Currently, setting "i386" constance is the only way for the extras lines. Here is the result . This example shows the efficiency of yum with biarch settings which sets apart from other package managers. Hopefully developers will find a way to enhance it.
