Looking at Fedora 20 Design Suite and onward

The latest itteration of Design Suite was successful using the latest stable release of Gnome 3.10.x. This time the testing went much better with some fixes to address. The goal to include applications with the style of Adobe Creative Suite is nearly complete with: Gimp (Photoshop), Inkscape (Illustrator and Framework), Scribus(InDesign), Premiere (PiTiVi), Acrobat (Evince, PDFShuffle, Xournal), in addition of Paints, Blender 3D and Hugin. Looking at the future release, here are some possible updates to implements: Add more categories for Gnome Shell (see  How to enable categories in Gnome 3.8 Shell application menu ), More plugins for Gimp notably gimp-separate+ for rudimentary CMYK support although Scribus does a better job, Inclusion of Tweak Tools . I personally think that application should be part of Setting Tools and possibly renamed as Advanced Settings, More Gnome 3.12 features Stay tuned...

Using Bluetooth to listen phone music

I recently discovered it is possible to listen to a music from smartphone connected with a laptop via Bluetooth. The test was done using a custom cyanogemod for a discontinued Samsung Galaxy Mini Dart and an updated Fedora 20 beta using BlueZ5 . The sound is jerky probably due to probably the hardware limit.

Fedora Design Suite update

Design Suite includes new tool like Gimp Paint Studio and Phatch. Inkscape course icon has moved under the tutorials section made in Design Suite wiki. If you have more tutorials you would like to add, simply edit the wiki section.

Trying Ogg Opus

Looking at the audio format, I learned about Ogg Opus , the successor of Vorbis. I was impressed with the sound quality at lower bitrate and the fact it uses much lower latency suitable for realtime streamer and VOip. The fact Opus is the audio standard prompted to slowly convert some of music collection I have. Reading Auphonic website about the comparison against MP3 , the sound quality is even noticeable meaning it is very usable online. I will see Opus use in much broader audience, its patent-free advantage is a welcome change toward audio industry especially mobile devices. I hope upstream will switch to that format.

Testing Gnome Software

The current graphical interface for PackageKit, gpk-update-viewer and gpk-application, found on Gnome Shell for Fedora 19 will be replaced by Gnome Software in the 20 release. Running the early version through virtualization shows the potential of become more user-friendly. The appearance is a mix of early Google Play formely Marketplace and Ubuntu Software Center itself derived from Linspire Click-n Run The category is much better structured in, for instance, Graphics grouping sub-categories like Photography. Currently, Gnome Software is still in progress but functional enough to do install/update/remove.

Introducing Design Software SIG

Design Software Special Interest Group (SIG in short) is born to fill the need of actively maintain packages related to design and include those unavailable in Fedora repository. The SIG has a wiki located on https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Design_Software which contains information about the mission and its fonctions. A big thank you for the Design Team for approving the initiative and the Infrastructure team for helping to set up the FAS account.

Towards Design Suite Release 20

Hard to believe it is already more than six month I maintained Design Suite. Looking at the previous release, I have been encouraged by some Suite users about the successful launch despite a minor issue from some applications notably Cinepaint. I missed the first ever Flock event as I deemed unready to present the suite yet and I had other commitments. However, Máirín's excellent recap allowed me to follow the activities of the project for more inspirations. For the 20th release of Fedora, I looked at similar suite like Ubuntu Studio website for inspiration purpose. Showing the application with pictures are good highlights meaning the Wiki section will have some updates. Design Suite using Gnome Shell as a base will enable the category, customize the dock to highlight the main graphical applications and include some tutorials. New applications and plugins for Gimp and an extension for Inkscape named sozi are added. One of package that will be hopefully available on repositor...

Unfortunately, Cinepaint failed to start due to bugz #904256 , other packages runs smoothly. You can download it via this channel . Why gpick is not updated to 0.2.5 in Fedora

gpick is available in Fedora repository under version 0.2.4. The reason the package does not match upstream is due to a bug related to lua dependency . I submitted a request for bundling exception due to that circumstance. As a packager, it is the first time I stumble into crucial issue.

yum autoremove

English Yum has autoremove feature since 2010 but there is a simple command to do so: yum autoremove Here is quick example below. Français Yum a l'abilit&eacut; d'"autoremove" depuis 2010 mais il existe une commande plus simple sur la version recente 3.4.3: yum autoremove Voici un exemple ci-dessous   $ su -c "yum autoremove"  Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit  Resolving Dependencies -->  Running transaction check --->  Package gnokii.x86_64 0:0.6.31-4.fc18 will be erased --->  Package net-snmp.x86_64 1:5.7.2-5.fc18.1 will be erased -->  Finished Dependency Resolution -->  Finding unneeded leftover dependencies --->  Marking lm_sensors-libs to be removed - no longer needed by net-snmp --->  Marking net-snmp-agent-libs to be removed - no longer needed by net-snmp  Found and removing 2 unneeded dependencies -->  Running transaction check --->  Pac...

Upgrade to Fedora 19 branch

My venerable Toshiba Satellite C650D got upgraded from Fedora 18 to Fedora 19 branch using yum because fedup-cli command could not update the kernel with either --instrepo or --skipkernel paramenter. The upgrade also fixed an outstanding issue related to the lagging Nautilus file manager while opening inside Gnome Shell (now version 3.8). A welcome change on that release is the ability to control notification messages, search and privacy (better late than never). Switching to different keyboard input is much easier with Super+Space (English, French, Japanese). The new user interface for system setting seen on Network, is easier for the eyes in term of readability. The crash report known as ABRT received a new interface but needed some refinement layout side although it is much better than the previous version found on Fedora 18. An year and half annoying issue is the inability of Calendar to recognize Thunderbird Lightning. I installed Ligthning extension and still no dice...

Design Suite update

English Initial revamping of Design Suite is completed with approval from Design Team. Nightly compose is currently broken but the local built currently resulted an "Oh no!" message. I took over gpick (much needed)for review but no reviewer yet. gimp-seperate+ is underway but the submitter is currently ill. I guess making Design Suite more professional is still a long way...

Reworking design suite livemedia

After taking maintainer-ship, the challenge is much bigger than expected with outdated information on the wiki and unmaintained ks file for a long time. Worse is the current spin on Fedora 18 has broken login authentication which I did not have a chance to test it. Learning from these lessons, here is some high goals: Rewrite the entire wiki of Design Suite. Select new default packages. Include fonts used by Fedora Design Team. Rework the entire ks file using desktop media(Gnome Shell) as a base. Increase the maximum size of livemedia to 4GB.

Beginning/Commençant 2013

English 2012 is over, 2013 has begun.  I recently accepted to take over Design Spin from Fedora Project and immediately worked on packaging overhaul for Fedora 19 Release taking advantage of Gnome Shell features like. The goal is to set Design Spin as a nearly professional free and open source suite. Martin awoke Echo Icon project with some revamped iconset. Task will be challenging but it can be done.

English It has been a while I wrote on this blog because I am busy running my own design business. Aside that, I recently plug an Apple iPad 2 to import pictures and videos on a Fedora 17 running Gnome Shell 3.4 out of box. It is remarkable what a free and open source software network can do to a device intended to primarily run on iTunes software.
